The past two seasons have been phenomenally successful for Borussia Dortmund and Poland striker Robert Lewandowski. Since his arrival from Lech Poznan for just shy of £4m back in 2010, he has bagged 75 goals in 139 appearances, a statistic which has grabbed the attention of some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Although his team were Bundesliga champions as recently as 2012 and reached the Champions League final, Lewandowski has seemingly been angling for a move to a bigger club. As his contract is due to expire with the Ruhr side in 12 months’ time, Dortmund’s moneymen may reluctantly sell him, but where could he end up playing next season should he leave?

Bavarian U-turn

Until recently, it seemed that the Pole was destined to join former team-mate Mario Gotze at major domestic rivals and Champions League final opponents Bayern Munich. They seemed willing to pay upwards of £20m for his signature, but nothing has materialised. This could be down to Dortmund’s refusal to sell yet another key player to their main rivals.

Should Lewandowski not go to Bayern, what are his other options? A move to the Premier League has been mooted, with Manchester United linked with a £20m-plus bid. Manchester City, who look a little lightweight up front, might also put an offer on the table, while Real Madrid could sign him as a replacement for the potentially Arsenal-bound Gonzalo Higuain.

Moyes left empty-handed

Although at one stage, a move to United looked in the offing, it seems that the hopes of new boss David Moyes have been dashed. As no other bids have yet come in for him, it looks like Lewandowski is prepared to see out his contract. If this does happen, rather than having the money to find a great replacement, Dortmund might find themselves out of pocket.

If he doesn’t stay put, then there’s a chance that Lewandowski might yet do all he can to get the Bayern Munich transfer back on. Should his current side eventually cave in and sell to the Bavarian giants, expect Dortmund to drive a hard bargain and try and bring in a replacement capable of filling what would be a huge void in their squad.
